Google Fit to Be Shut Down as Google Health Takes Over – Migration Tool Planned
Google Announces End of Google Fit, Consolidates Fitness Apps Under Google Health
Google is shutting down its long-running Google Fit platform, merging its features into the newly rebranded Google Health app. The move comes as the company completes the integration of its Fitbit acquisition, with a migration tool expected to roll out later this year.

'We are streamlining our health and fitness offerings to provide a unified experience,' said a Google spokesperson in a statement. 'Users will have a clear path to move their data to Google Health.'
Background
Google Fit launched in 2014 as a health-tracking platform for Android and iOS, aggregating data from sensors and third-party apps. In 2021, Google acquired Fitbit for $2.1 billion, setting the stage for consolidation. Early leaks from 9to5Google last month hinted at a rebranding of the Fitbit app to Google Health.
The decision eliminates the parallel existence of Google Fit and Fitbit, simplifying Google's fitness ecosystem under a single brand. The move also follows years of user confusion over multiple apps and overlapping features.
What This Means
Current Google Fit users will need to migrate their activity history, weight logs, and workout data to Google Health before the shutdown. Google promises a migration tool by the end of 2025, but exact timing remains unconfirmed.
'This consolidation reduces fragmentation but raises legitimate privacy and continuity concerns,' said Amy Chen, a health-tech analyst at Digital Trends Research. 'Users with years of data in Google Fit need assurance that no data will be lost during the transition.'
For Wear OS smartwatch owners, Google Health will become the default fitness tracker, replacing the current Google Fit integration. Wear OS 5, expected at Google I/O 2025, is likely to showcase deeper Health app integration.

Google advises users to back up their Google Fit data via Google Takeout ahead of the migration. The company has not yet published a detailed FAQ or specific app store removal dates.
Industry Reactions
'Google is finally aligning its fitness strategy,' commented Mark Torres, a mobile technology journalist. 'But the timing is odd—just weeks before I/O 2025. This suggests they want to get ahead of the news.'
Some users expressed frustration on social media, with Reddit threads decrying forced migrations. Google has not responded to change.org petitions urging it to keep Google Fit as a standalone option.
What’s Next
Google Health—formerly the Fitbit app—will receive a design overhaul to match Material You aesthetics. The migration tool will allow one-click transfer of steps, heart rate, sleep, and nutrition data.
Google I/O 2025, scheduled for May 20–21, is expected to provide more details on the shutdown timeline, exact migration tool release, and any integration with Gemini, Google's AI assistant. Until then, users are encouraged to explore Google Health’s features and test the transition flow.
For those still on Google Fit, the app will continue to function until the shutdown date—likely in late 2025. After that, only Google Health will be supported.
