Release Highlights

Enhancement Breakdown

Of the 70 enhancements in Kubernetes v1.36:

  • 18 have graduated to Stable – these features are now production-ready and enabled by default.
  • 25 are entering Beta – these features are ready for broader testing and feedback.
  • 25 are entering Alpha – these features are experimental and disabled by default.

Additionally, several features have been deprecated or removed entirely. For details, see the Deprecations and Removals section.

Stable Enhancements

Eighteen enhancements have reached Stable status in v1.36, meaning they are now considered mature and reliable for production use. While the full list is available in the official release notes, notable stable features include improvements to workload scheduling, network policies, and storage management. These graduations demonstrate the community's commitment to hardening Kubernetes over time.

Beta Enhancements

Twenty-five features are graduating to Beta in this release. Beta features are feature-gated and enabled by default, but may still undergo changes based on user feedback. Examples include enhanced security controls and better observability tools. Users are encouraged to test these features in non-production environments and provide feedback through the Kubernetes community channels.

Alpha Enhancements

Twenty-five new alpha features are introduced in v1.36. These experimental capabilities are disabled by default and require explicit feature gate activation. They cover areas such as advanced workload scaling, multi-cluster management, and improved resource efficiency. Alpha features are subject to change or removal in future releases.

Deprecations and Removals

As with every Kubernetes release, v1.36 includes several deprecations and removals. Operators and developers should review the full changelog to plan for upgrade paths. Notable deprecated items include older API versions for certain resources and legacy command-line flags. The community strongly recommends migrating to the latest supported versions well before the deprecated features are removed in subsequent releases.

The v1.36 release arrives as the season changes, and its theme reflects that transition. Haru is a Japanese word that carries multiple layers of meaning: 春 (spring), 晴れ (clear skies), and 遥か (far-off horizon). These three concepts – a season, a sky, and a distant future – are woven into the release spirit.

Logo Inspiration

The logo, created by community member avocadoneko / Natsuho Ide, draws inspiration from Katsushika Hokusai’s Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji – the same series that produced the iconic The Great Wave off Kanagawa. The v1.36 logo specifically reimagines the print Fine Wind, Clear Morning (also known as Red Fuji), depicting Mount Fuji glowing red under a summer dawn. The number 36 connects to Hokusai’s 36 views, a fitting parallel for Kubernetes v1.36.

Guardian Cats and Calligraphy

Two cats, Stella and Nacho, appear at the foot of Mount Fuji in the logo. They wear the Kubernetes helm on their collars, standing in for komainu – the lion-dog guardians of Japanese shrines. They represent the larger community of SIGs, working groups, maintainers, reviewers, and contributors who safeguard the project together.

Across the mountain is written the calligraphy 「晴れに翔け」(hare ni kake), meaning “soar into clear skies.” It is the first part of the couplet:

晴れに翔け、未来よ明け — “Soar into clear skies; toward tomorrow's sunrise.”

This phrase captures the aspiration for this release: to carry the project forward into clear skies, with each release paving the way for the next, toward horizons far beyond what any single view can capture.
